Synopsis

While the girl was turning into the Moon, she asked repetitively one single question: What do you see when you look at me?

About the process of creating the film

The film is a commision by the Syros International Film Festival, in the context of the nine month long workshop “Peripheral Vision” (2020 – 2021). SIFF and Cimatheque -the Alternative Film Centre of Cairo- provided us with archived material, such as the Historical Archive of Syros and a variety of home movies from Egypt, more than 50 years old. Syros Sound Meetings shared their audio archive with multiple recordings that happened in the island of Syros the last decade by sonic artists. Every sound effect and atmosphere in the film comes solely from this archive.

The methodology used by the filmmaker was very close to theatre practices, where diverse elements are used to create one story. The obsession with the moon in Oscar Wilde’s theatre play Salome (1891), became the axis of the story. Nasa’s Video and Image Library and personal archive from the childhood of the filmmaker came along to complete an experimental timeless sci fi film.

About the workshop

Peripheral Vision is an extended hybrid online and on-site workshop for filmmakers and artists focusing on cross-media interpretive strategies for audiovisual archives, moderated by filmmaker and Cimatheque co-founder Tamer El Said. Held in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Athen and in collaboration with the Cimatheque – Alternative Film Center in Cairo, Syros Sound Meetings, and the Historical Archive of Syros, the workshop has led to the development of the five short films, created by nine participating filmmakers
